Network for Life of Austin, Inc.
2006

NFLA is a small, volunteer-run organization formed 2005 because a need in the Austin Community was seen by me, Cheryl Selby.  I am an ex-offender and in recovery from a past of drugs, dysfunction, and generational poor role models.
Since we are volunteer operated, each person the clients come in contact with have similar histories, but now live a successful, new lifestyle through Jesus and the recovery fellowship.  This enables the individual to have a trust and comfort level usually not there when dealing with “community entities”.  We speak the same language right from the start.
Services include a phone number they can call 24-7 for resources, encouragement, crisis intervention, advice or counseling.  There is not a cost for this, but it gives the ex-offender or struggling addict a connection with someone that cares in the Austin community.
The Overcomers Group is run like a peer support group and we work the 12 Steps every Wednesday for an hour and a half.  This is a combination of group therapy, 12 step homework and Christianity as well as a place to network for employment and other basic needs.
Maggie’s Home is for women.  It requires a year commitment to abstinence in romantic relationships as well as to chemicals.  This is strictly enforced with a house monitor on site called “The Head Angel”.  Life skills classes are weekly as well as a Bible Study.   These include anger management, budgeting, cooking, citizenship, home ownership and other relevant and requested information on life change issues.
Ex-offender Aftercare is MOVING in September!  Please call for services.  This Faith-based option for resources is to assist anyone in the community get ID, MAP, bus cards, a free Bible or just talk.  We also offer a list of nurturing churches and community funding options; we even can register them to vote!  This service is very individualized and as our funds are available, we provide rides to MHMR, calls to family members, socks, hygiene kits, food bags and clothes.  This is for ANY ex-offender.  Office is open as volunteers are available, but can always call 698-5678 or sign up for an appointment in the Marketplace office at #201.  Our office is located at #104.
Please read our attached Mission Statement and Vision Statement because it really speaks to how we carry out these ideas into practice.
